MONTECON WILL INCORPORATE TWO GIANT MOBILE CRANES TO OPERATE LARGE SHIPS

Montecon -main operator of port services in the public areas of the Port of Montevideo, - decided to incorporate two mobile cranes with capacity to reach up to 21 rows of containers.

Designed at the request of Montecon and built by the Austrian/German company Liebherr Maritime Cranes, they are 57.4 metres high, equivalent to a 20-storey building, and are the largest in the world in terms of their range (4 metres).Liebherr Maritime Crane is the world's leading manufacturer of harbour cranes, both mobile and ship-to-shore, and has a long-term strategic partnership with Montecon. The new units, whose assembly will be completed in the port of Montevideo, departed from the German town of Rostock in mid-July after 18 months of design and production work. The cranes, of the LHM 800 type, will make a 13,000 km journey and will transform the profile of the port of the capital city: "The decision to request the design and construction of these new port cranes was taken in response to the needs of our customers. Ships are getting bigger and bigger and Montecon, as the main private operator of the public areas of the port of Montevideo, has the responsibility to go ahead and adapt to the requirements of the container market. In 2015 we ordered a giant mobile crane, but we realized that a second one was needed to enhance our service. In a scenario of uncertainty of the Uruguayan economy, these new investments ratify once again our commitment to our customers, to our workers and to the Port of Montevideo", explained Juan Olascoaga, Montecon's CEO. The company began its relationship with Liebherr fifteen years ago, incorporating the first Liebherr Panamax mobile harbour crane of the LHM 400 type, which was delivered in 2001. Since then, the relationship has been growing, as Montecon has maintained a constant investment criterion, aimed at improving its operational performance. In 2012 and 2013, the company added three LHM 600 models, the largest in the world so far. While supervising the construction of the equipment at the German base, the Liebherr technical team came up with the idea of producing even larger ones, which were commissioned immediately. Leopold Berthold, General Manager of Liebherr in Rostock, said that the addition of these two units with their unique features would enhance the possibilities offered by the port of Rostock, making it "very attractive for shipping lines".
